It really fucking sucks to follow men who are pro-feminist and watch them get awesome, engaging questions about their opinions on this that and the other regarding feminism, (meanwhile, a couple of days ago I was asked if I would participate in a wet t-shirt contest) simply because they’re a dude and people  care about their opinion on feminism (and anything really, but especially that, ironically) more than women’s. Women have been saying the same shit on the internet, in speeches, in books, and with much more eloquence and a couple more relevant college degrees for decades.

We are at the mercy of whatever these men decide to spew out about us thinking they’re trying to help, because their audience is twice as large and their opinion is the only one taken seriously by our oppressor group… because, and it is important not to forget, that they are part of that oppressor group. They are invited to news stations, featured on other websites, readily given huge platforms that we would have had to dumb down our material, curtsey and kiss the asses of dozens of people to even get a chance at having.

When they get criticism from men for what they say, they are chided for breaking the ~brocode~ at worst, given the respect of a human being always, and their life is almost never threatened.

When I speak my mind, I am inundated with threats, slurs and disgusting hate speech. I’ve taken to tracking the people who come to my page because at least I know who these nasty people are, and I can feel a little safer for that.

Even in this space, where everyone is supposedly checking themselves, and aware of patterns of social hierarchy, they are dripping with privilege every time they speak. So next time you go flocking to worship a man who stumbles through regurgitating what little bit of feminist ideology he has read on our blogs, in our books, in our speeches, please keep this in mind.
